NFL Week One Recap

Week 1
ATS: 8-6-2
Straight Up: 9-7
Over/Under: 8-7-1

GB @ SEA
SEA -5
46
Pick: SEA -5. Seahawks win 23-14 (Under)
Result: SEA 36-16 (Over)
Seattle's offense did a little more damage than expected, but anyone who expects a healthy Seahawks team to lose at home is crazy.

MIN @ STL
STL -4
44
Pick: MIN +4. Vikings win 34-13 (Over)
Result: MIN 34-6 (Under)
My over/unders are off to a terrible start. Again, I was almost dead-on with the result and score. St. Louis was just a touchdown worse than I thought!

NO @ ATL
NO -3
51.5
Pick: NO -3. Saints win 38-24 (Over)
Result: ATL 37-34 (Over)
Well that's disappointing. I expected the Saints defense to be significantly better than it showed on Sunday. I have to assume it'll improve as the season goes on. That said, I'm not surprised that Atlanta is much, much better than they were a year ago. I'd plan on the Falcons surprising quite a few opponents this year.

CLE @ PIT
PIT -6.5
40.5
Pick: Steelers -6.5. Pittsburgh wins 27-12 (Under)
Result: PIT 30-27 (Over)
Speaking of surprising...I thought this one was all wrapped up when Pittsburgh took a 27-3 lead. I don't know whether I'm supposed to be impressed with the Browns' offensive surge to get back in the game or completely dismayed at the Steelers' lack of defense in the second half. My assumption is that the Steelers got a big lead and let up on the gas pedal. I still don't think the Browns are any good.

JAX @ PHI
PHI -10
53
Pick: PHI -10. Eagles win 31-10 (Under)
Result: Eagles 34-17 (Under)
This pick was looking grim for quite a while, even though it ultimately proved to be right. Maybe the Foles-led Eagles aren't as clear a favorite in the NFC East as everyone expects!

OAK @ NYJ
NYJ -5
39.5
Pick: OAK +5. The Jets win 17-16 (Under)
Result: NYJ 19-14 (Under)
I was close, but the Jets managed to tie the spread. Either way, that played out almost exactly as I expected. Neither team has much offense.

CIN @ BAL
BAL -1.5
43
Pick: BAL -1.5. Ravens win 17-13 (Under)
Result: CIN 23-16 (Under)
Yeah, I should have known better. No Ray Rice = No Ravens in the playoffs.

BUF @ CHI
CHI -7
48.5
Pick: CHI -7. Bears win 42-27 (Over)
Result: Bills 23-20 (Under)
Whenever I pick the Bills to win, they blow it. When I pick them to lose, they play a miraculous game and win. So I'll keep picking them to lose and hope for an undefeated season.

WAS @ HOU
HOU -3
45
Pick: HOU -3. Texans win 33-27 (Over)
Result: HOU 17-6 (Under)
I'm not sure why I thought this game would be high-scoring. Was I on crack last week? The Texans get the win, but losing Clowney for 4-6 weeks could be a big problem.

TEN @ KC
KC -4.5
43.5
Pick: TEN +4.5. Kansas City wins 20-17 (Under)
Result: TEN 26-10 (Under)
So I guess the Chiefs aren't going to be anywhere near as good as they were last year...

NE @ MIA
NE -4.5
47
Pick: Pats -4.5. New England wins 34-17 (Over)
Result: MIA 33-20 (Over)
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Silly Patriots. Now they'll only be 15-1. Well...more like 12-4. But they're still a lock for the AFC East title and will probably give Denver a run for their money in January. Miami isn't actually good; the Dolphins just give the Pats headaches.

CAR @ TB
TB -1
39.5
Pick: CAR +1. Carolina wins 18-13 (Under)
Result: CAR 20-14
Close enough. Very little offense, good defense...usually pretty easy to predict.

SF @ DAL
SF -5
51
Pick: SF -5. 49ers win 42-31 (Over)
Result: SF 28-17 (Under)
Had the 49ers not let off the gas after the first quarter, they probably would have made it to 42 and hit the over. Looks like their injury-plagued defense is going to do just fine. Dallas' defense is just as laughable as anticipated.

IND @ DEN
DEN -7
55
Pick: IND +7. Denver wins 45-42 (Over)
Result: DEN 31-24 (Tie)
Seriously? They tied the spread and the Over/Under? I've never seen that before. But I was pretty close on my pick. Both defenses are a little better than I expected, but both offenses are virtually unstoppable (when they want to be).

NYG @ DET
DET -4.5
47
Pick: NYG +4.5. The Giants win 35-31 (Over)
Result: DET 35-14 (Over)
Apparently Eli is going to throw 1,232 interceptions again this season. Don't expect the Lions to be awesome; this game was merely a testament to how bad the Giants are probably going to be.

SD @ ARI
ARI -3
45
Pick: SD +3. Chargers win 27-20 (Over)
Result: ARI 18-17 (Under)
Both of these defenses are better than I expected. I'm also impressed with Carson Palmer's poise; the Cardinals may surprise some more teams this season, though I doubt they'll be a serious playoff contender in the very tough NFC West. Do you remember the years when the NFC West was laughable and the NFC East was the best division in football? My how times have changed.
